Dowda Senior Consultants does not work with all Richmond-area Senior Living Communities. Our goal is to promote a high standard of care, so we partner with communities who meet this expectation. We partner with communities in all areas of RVA and we also work with communities who provide a range of services at various price points.

Yes, it is a privilege for our team to support seniors who have the goal of safely staying home. Through our network of experienced resources, we are able to help seniors and their families find excellent care so they can achieve their goals. Our passion for working with and supporting seniors who desire to “age in place” sets us apart from others in the senior placement industry.

Dowda Senior Consultants’ advisory services are free of charge to all seniors and their families whether the senior moves to a senior living community or decides to “age in place.”

Dowda Senior Consultants receives a referral fee when we help seniors transition into senior living communities. This referral fee structure is an “industry standard” for senior placement agencies; however, Dowda Senior Consultants intentionally uses a significant portion of our revenue (over 20%) to support seniors throughout the Greater Richmond area. Our team’s on-going relationship within the Senior Living Communities often provides an opportunity for our Senior Advisors to advocate for our seniors and families and, oftentimes, get them a better “deal” as a result of their trust in our team. Unlike other placement agencies, Dowda Senior Consultants redirects our profits to provide aid for seniors in need and support to seniors who desire to “age in place” as well as providing fellowship and community events for seniors, dementia training, and dementia caregiver support. Dowda Senior Consultants strongly believes all seniors deserve the opportunity to safely receive great care – whether that is at home or within a senior living community.

The “DSC Senior Fund” is a fund designated to support seniors in the Greater Richmond area. This allows our team to work with and care for seniors with financial needs, seniors who need a high level of care, and seniors who desire to “age in place” or stay safely at home. In addition to supporting individuals, this fund also supports the senior community throughout the Greater Richmond area through sponsoring dementia care, support, and training events; community-wide events, fellowship and fun; and through dementia date-nights, senior living informational sessions and workshops. The “DSC Senior Fund” supports all seniors with the ultimate goal of giving all seniors access to great options and opportunities to achieve their goals on their senior living journey.

Dowda Senior Consultants provides comprehensive, on-going support to the seniors with whom we work as we continue to advocate and care for them throughout each next step. Our team stays with our clients – we continue to visit our seniors and we support them, whether they are at home or living in a senior living community. For example, our team visits seniors on their birthdays with baked goods, visits seniors with out of town family, and continues to advocate for our seniors within their senior living communities. Additionally, through the DSC Senior Fund, Dowda Senior Consultants provides on-going, in-home support for seniors who desire to “age in place” and safely live at home. We believe that all seniors should have access to safe options and reliable resources, so we intentionally designate funding to support seniors throughout the larger RVA community. We also provide dementia care training and support as well as fun-filled fellowship events for seniors within the larger community.

We stay in touch with the seniors and families within our Dowda Senior Community for their entire journey, which allows our team to have first-hand knowledge and experiences within the communities. Oftentimes, we can put you in touch with a family who has a loved one living within a specific community, so you can talk with and have your questions answered by someone who can personally address your concerns.

No. Dowda Senior Consultants’ advisory services are free of charge regardless of whether your loved one moves. It is our pleasure to be able to support seniors in finding the best living situation and fit for them – whether that is moving into a senior living community or safely continuing to stay home and “age in place.”

Absolutely not! Dowda Senior Consultants always enjoys helping families plan ahead or discuss the various options for senior living, whether that is safely staying at home or moving. Time and again, the families with whom we work share that having a conversation with our team has helped provide them with a better understanding of available options along with peace of mind and a lower anxiety level. We would love to help you think through your choices and help support your loved one in achieving their goals as best we can. Additionally, we highly recommend all of our seniors and families have a back-up plan – just in case an emergency occurs and a move is necessary, and our Dowda Senior Consultants’ Senior Advisors are happy to help you create the right back-up plan as well.

Yes! If your family member needs support in the home or has an emergency situation and has to navigate rehabs or other options, we are able to help guide and walk with you through these things. Additionally, we have found that over the years, seniors who hope to live at home often do not have an emergency back-up plan and are forced to make senior living choices and decisions in the midst of a crisis. Usually, at this point the senior is unable to participate in the decision-making process which causes the search itself to be a panicked race rather than a leisurely, thoughtful stroll. Our Dowda Senior Consultants’ Senior Advisors would love to help you and your loved one create and navigate an emergency back-up plan ahead of time – both to provide the senior with agency and choice in the process and to give the family a sense of peace in knowing there is a back-up plan in place.

The good news is that assumption is often incorrect. Assisted living communities are regulated by the Department of Social Services and are able to offer a very high level of care – far beyond what most people, and even some doctors, realize. Assisted Living communities are much less expensive and much more home-like than skilled nursing facilities. Oftentimes, families are surprised by how lovely assisted living communities are and how much care they can offer.
